Heat Related Tips:
1. Never leave your pet in the car. During warm weather the inside of your car can
reach 120 degrees in a matter of minutes even when parked in the shade and the
windows are rolled down.
2 Always provide plenty of water and shade for your pets while they play outside. But
be sure to keep your pet away from the puddles in the street for their drinks. The
puddles of water may included deadly antifreeze or other harmful chemicals. A plastic
baby pool is a perfect place for you dog to take a refreshing splash or soak and can be
filled with clean water regularly.
3. Pets, like people, can suffer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Be aware of
signs of heat stress such as heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness
or staggering or vomiting. If your pet becomes over heated, their body temperature
should be lowered. Move you pet into the shade and apply cool, not cold, water over the
neck and chest only. Let the pet drink small amounts of water of lick ice cubes.
Safety Related Tips:
1. Don't put your pet in the back of a truck. The safest seat for your pooch is in the
cab.
2. Watch out for deadly fertilizers and deadly plants. Some plant foods, fertilizers and
insecticides can be fatal if you pet ingests them. Plants such as hydrangea, wisteria,
delphimium, foxglove, privet hedge and monkshood can be toxic so keep you pet from
nibbling on them.
3. Dog bites are more likely during the summer months. We all become irritable
during hot weather. Take special care when introducing visitors, strangers and
children. Spaying and neutering your pet reduces the likelihood that they will bite.
4. Make sure that your pet always wears a collar and identification tag. This may be
your pet's ticket home if you are separated.
